Creative Economy and Creative Geography: Methodological Approaches and Practice

Abstract

Trends of humanization of geography contribute to the strengthening of contacts with related social disciplines, forming new scientific areas of research. The leading economic geographers announced creative economy among modern trends as “growth poles”, the essence of the creative economy in modern conditions is the shift of emphasis from material resources to intellectual and informational resources. The paper is devoted to the review of the creative economy as a basic of “construction” of a creative city, creation of an innovative environment, development of creative industries, which is the basis for the formation of a separate scientific direction – creative geography from the perspective of the spatiotemporal approach in the foreseeable future. The current outfit of creative industries is as follows: advertising, art and antique market, architecture, crafts and applied art, fashion, design, film and video, music, performing arts (drama and music theater, modern dance, various shows etc.), literature and book publishing, software multimedia and interactive computer programs, television and radio. The potential of forming directions of creative geography in certain scientific areas, training disciplines is represented. The experience of economic and geographical study of folk arts and crafts is presented on the example of the Baikal region, developed by, the demand from the increasing tourist flow to Lake Baikal, among other factors (2.2 million people in 2018). Baseline data are mainly materials from field thematic surveys. The thematic map (based on the database of the largest public organization in the Irkutsk region, the Association of Folk Artists “Onyx”) represents a spatial characteristics and diversity of Siberian folk traditional arts and crafts.
