Abstract
This article is devoted to the delineation of limnic zones based on the application of satellite data. The object of this study was the Barguzin Bay, which is the largest and deepest bay of Lake Baikal and is subject to the influence of a number of anthropogenic factors. During the study, partly cloudy Landsat-8,9 images for the ice-free period in 2013–2025 in the visible, near, shortwave, and thermal infrared bands were selected. For image processing, the freely distributed geographic information system QGIS and Orfeo ToolBox modules were used. Based on the collected Landsat8,9 data, up-to-date water-land masks were created and separate environmentally significant parameters of the aquatic environment, such as surface water temperature and some spectral turbidity indices: FAI (Floating Algae Index) and Harma were estimated. For zoning, bathymetric information with a resolution of 15 arc seconds was also used. The water area of Barguzin Bay was divided into segments, for each segment an assessment of the statistical parameters of position and dispersion of temperature characteristics, turbidity indices, and depth distribution was performed. Based on the above data segments were then combined into limnic zones through the analysis of the nature of the relationship between the values of spectral turbidity indices with temperature and depth. For each of the established zones, the genesis of suspended sediments was analyzed. Zones where turbidity is caused by water “blooming”, were identified as well as zones where inorganic suspended sediments predominate, associated with the inflow and redistribution of river sediments and sediments caused by shore abrasion.
