Abstract
The article presents the current ecological and geochemical condition of sediments of accumulative shores of the Yarki Island in the northern part of Lake Baikal. Sediment samples were taken at key pointes. The tasks of this work also included the determination of the chemical composition of the deposits of the Yarki Island with using the XRF method and the assessment of their pollution. It has been established that in the considered coastal zone of the Yarki bar, the sediments are contaminated with heavy metals such as strontium, lead, and in some places arsenic, which probably have an anthropogenic source of their entry into the bar’s sediments. It indicates the possibility of smaller particles to sorb some elements. The distribution of chemical elements along the Yarki Island is uneven. There is no dependence between the indicator values and the location of the points in relation to the channels. It indicates a minimal effect of the channels on the condition of the sediments of the Yarki Island. Probably the increased content of chemical elements in some sediment sampling points is associated with the location of recreational zones in these areas.
