Fundamental cartographic support of many regions, especially the Baikal region, allows you to create effective maps to identify territorial patterns, preserve and improve the environment, study the investment marketing of territories, etc. The article presents the experience of socio-economic mapping of the Baikal region and some methodological developments. An inventory of the socio-economic maps of the Baikal region, created by the team of the Institute of Geography of the SB RAS and by authors of the article, was carried out. Prospects for the development of socio-economic mapping of the Baikal region are associated with geographic information mapping in the ecological-economic direction for managing territories, and minimizing environmental and economic damage. In the socio-economic mapping of the Baikal region, new ways of development have been identified as a result of the generalization and rethinking of huge cartographic material. At the same time, it is important not to lose the tradition of high-quality cartographic support of the regions, to prepare maps for needs of the new information society.
