The crossroad of Geodynamics: Hypothesis on Lithospheric Plates vs. Hypothesis on Mantle Plumes

Abstract
The textbook by G. R. Foulger «Plates vs. plumes: a geological controversy » raises the important problem of validity for the lower mantle origin of plumes, which are expected to generate intraplate magmatism. Unlike predictions of the plate hypothesis, those of the plume one are not confirmed by geological observations. Distribution of intraplate volcanism is satisfactorily explained by lithospheric extension models and local upper mantle convection.
