Depressions of the Central Siberian Plateau: Location, Morphology and Modern Relief Formation

Abstract

For the first time, the task is to study the geomorphological features of the development of such negative landforms as depressions for platform conditions in Central and Eastern Siberia. The importance of the study of depressions is emphasized, especially for the insufficiently explored regions of the Central Siberian plateau. A brief generalization of the available geological and geomorphological materials is given for the six main, largest depressions of the Central Siberian plateau, formed in its various sites – from the very north to the southern borders (Popigayskaya, Aganylyiskaya, Essei-Muruktinskaya, Voevolikhanskaya, Verkhne-Vilyuiskaya and Khandinskaya). The character of location, morphology, and modern exogenous morphogenesis are described for these depressions. The localization of the depressions to different structural and geomorphological zones and types of morphostructures is noted. The main reasons of their occurrence and formation features were identified, among which, first of all, neotectonic movements and Quaternary glaciations should be called. The prevalence of leading fluvial, permafrost, and lacustrine processes in modern exogenous morphogenesis of the depressions was revealed, although their ratio varies depending on the location in different morphoclimatic zones (from the dominance of periglacial processes in the north to humid temperate zones in the south). The studied depressions are divided into three groups that differ in the features of the history of origin, morphology, and the nature of modern morphogenesis.
